Jamakin Me Excited
In, now less than nine days, I will be going to Jamaica for a week for my friend’s wedding. I can’t be anymore excited about the trip and the wedding. As I do when I take trips, I like to read up on the area I’m going to be visiting. Now this will be only the second time I’ve ever left the country; the last time was in February of 1999 when I went to Puerto Vallarta for a week.
But back to Jamaica. A couple of things you might not have known about Jamaica. For starters, contrary to popular belief, marijuana is not legal in Jamaica. However, that being said, as is my understanding it is readily available and not hard to find, however you need to be careful as there are undercover cops that try to catch people buying.
Jamaica is so anti gay that it has been called “the most homophobic place on earth”. I have to say this comes as a not only a disappointment but also a pretty big surprise as well. I mean, I thought Bob Marley was all about peace and love and therefore many of the Jamaicans would be the same way. I guess they are, as long as you are straight. Fortunately for me, I’m pretty masculine and also will probably not leave the resort much, if at all.
While Jamaica is technically in the Eastern time zone, they do not participate in daylight savings time so even though we will be quite a bit east of Chicago, we will still be on the same time. This was quite the big debate I got into with some friends over the weekend, many of whom insisted that Jamaica was an hour ahead of us.
Jamaica had one of the highest murder rates in the world for many years, however the murder rate has been dropping the past several years. I’m not too worried though as we will be confined mainly to the resort.
Despite all of that, I’m still very exited to go.

I’m excited for you. I’d love to go! Can’t wait to hear all about it and see pics. =)
Thanks! I can’t wait to go either
I’m excited about possible pictures!!! And I also find this very odd that its so homophobic… hmmm… do you think it has to do with their race? Like how African Americans have this big taboo about it? Or… at least I heard this was so… maybe its something like that… and yeah, peace and love…. but thats also supposedly the main focus of most christian churches, yet…. hating bastards.
yes I do totally think their African heritage plays a lot into it along with their religious beliefs. either way, it is sad
